Requirements For Acquiring A Military Scholarship

There are a few different types of military scholarships available for higher learning. Each has slightly different requirements. The scholarships cover varying amounts of the cost of college and sometimes even provide money for extra expenses beyond tuition. All programs require active service from the applicant or the active service of a direct family member, like a spouse or parent. Some of the awards are offered directly by the military while others are distributed by individual colleges. The amount might not always cover the full cost of tuition. Reserve Scholarship Awards

Military scholarships are available through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) of each branch of the armed forces. This program is available to high school graduates who are under the age of 25. It pays for four years of college in exchange for several years of active duty service in the chosen branch of the military. Applicants must have good academic grades and good standardized test scores. Each person must also be very physically fit and will need to pass physical fitness tests for acceptance. Every scholarship recipient is required to march, perform drills and take part in other activities while attending classes. The ROTC will pay for full tuition while attending a university and will provide a monthly allowance for cadets that can be used for any purpose. Active Duty And Veterans There are many military scholarships available for individuals who are currently on duty or who were honorably discharged from the military after service was completed. These are offered through various programs, private institutions and other organizations that are focused on helping veterans acquire a higher education. The qualifications vary depending on the scholarship. Most qualifications are based on the service record of the applicant, previous educational accomplishments and personal goals. The essay questions are very important and should express exactly how the applicant will use the education that is gained after graduation. A few scholarships are specifically targeted at individuals who want to complete an education in order to work in the civilian areas of defense and security. Family Eligibility There are a number of military spouse scholarships available to the husbands and wives of active duty personnel in all branches of the armed forces. Certain awards are also available to the spouses of veterans or the children of active duty officers. The application process for these types of scholarships varies greatly. The most basic requirement will be an essay describing why college attendance is important. A few have no requirements other than proof of having a spouse in the armed forces. Some of the larger military spouse scholarships require good grades and a strong essay, as well as excellent standardized testing scores.
