Many children have a problem with Creative Writing; it’s a most difficult topic to master, yet an ability to write effectively is certainly required for assessments later on. Personal Statements for university and job applications all depend on competent use of written English. No wonder, then, it’s such a concern to parents. Our Tutors are lucky, in this area, to be enclosed by so many exceptional first-rate educational organizations, – prime independent schools, and local schools with parents equally determined and devoted for their kids. Parents from all these schools invest substantially in out-of-hours tuition, and I see a lot of them in consultation. And there’s one primary concern: Creative Writing. It is actually one of the greatest causes of anxiety. Parents claim that their kids ‘take a long time to write’, or ‘have quite a lot of concepts, but cannot write’. It always saddens me to meet up with kids who’ve been under a pressurized regime with enormous quantities of homework, – in some cases marked by their parents, – and are very tired of it. And well they could be. Their ‘creative writing’ is unexciting, and monotonous. They cannot produce the quantity needed in the time, and are unable to structure an essay. I am usually asked what could be done. Commitment and inspiration is extremely important. Kids must be devoted and confident in their ability to talk, and also to record their vocabulary. Their word power needs to be sufficiently strong to support their task, and give them a choice of vocabulary. This issue needs creative strategy. Art is key. The Achievers Creative Concept program, which constantly produces exceptional results, is art-dependent. Even without any specialized knowledge, there’s so much parents could do from home to support their children, and it’s never too soon to get started: Entice young children to love using the library, and continue attending it. Make sure they also read newspapers and publications. Spend time there, look at the textbooks on the shelf, and read all of them with your child. Form stories with younger kids, about their toys, animals or environment around them. Draw with your kid; talk about your sketches, using adjectives to widen thought and assist your child in mastering brand new vocabulary. Write the adjectives, sentences along with stories on the paper, then motivate your child to do the writing. Work towards a sheet of A4 in three, separate written paragraphs. Make sure your child knows how to prepare, and work towards five, well-prepared paragraphs. Continue with the artwork, and widen the scope. Keep on looking, in ‘in depth’ detail, which could be translated into writing. Keep discussing, to strengthen vocabulary and thought. Kids are naturally innovative, – to write effectively they must perceive the written word to be an extension of their general level of conversation.
